Abstract

The current study aimed to identify the level of depression among diabetic patients, examine the differences in depression levels based on gender, and explore the relationship between diabetes and depression. To achieve these goals, the researchers used the PHQ-9 depression scale and developed a clinical interview scale. After verifying the validity and reliability—PHQ-9 scored (0.86) and the clinical interview scale scored (0.80)—the tools were applied to a sample of 50 individuals (25 males and 25 females) who suffer from diabetes and attend the National Center for Diabetes Treatment and Research at Al-Mustansiriyah University..

The results showed that depression levels among diabetic patients ranged from mild to relatively severe in females, and from mild to relatively severe in males, based on the PHQ-9 scale. There were no significant differences in depression levels based on gender for either of the tools. The results also indicated a correlation between depression and diabetes. Based on the findings, several recommendations and suggestions were made.
